Player Profiles: The Team

We’ve got 15 player profiles so far so I thought it was about time we put together a team. The plan is to put together this first draft team and then every 2 months or so we’ll reassess the first 11 and attempt to put together the ultimate team. For now I am going to go with a standard 4-3-3 formation

Players to choose from: Peter Schmeichel

With only one keeper to pick from it is obvious that Schmeichel is going to be in this first team. To be honest I don’t see anyone replacing him anytime soon. The Danish shot stopper was an incredible player, an intimidating presence who you genuinely backed in a one on one situation with any striker.

Players to choose from: Paolo Maldini, Roberto Carlos, Tony Adams, Lilian Thuram and Jaap Stam

Left back: Roberto Carlos

A marauding full back with a fearsome shot, one of the most decorated players in the history of the game, Carlos has won just about every trophy available to him. One of the many Galacticos who feature in the Player Profile section.

Centre backs: Tony Adams and Paolo Maldini (Captain)

Adams and Maldini were both 1 club men, both had long careers at the highest level and both bring a very specific set of skills to the team. While Maldini was a more calm and considered player who times his challenges to perfection, Adams was more physical and I believe that the two together would complement each other perfectly. Jaap Stam misses out but will be an intimidating force off the bench and the team would not really lose a step if he played. Adams will play the role of the commanding centre half who, along with Schmeichel, will deal with balls into the box while Maldini has more than enough ability to deal with anybody else.

Right back: Lilian Thuram

The only option real option at right back. Like Carlos, Thuram was known for his prowess going forward. While he didn’t score many goals his 2 against Croatia in the 1998 World Cup semi-final show that he is a big game player. One of the most physically gifted players of his generation.

Players to choose from: Zinedine Zidane, Claude Makelele, Gheorge Hagi and Pavel Nedved

Centre midfielders: Claude Makelele, Zinedine Zidane, Gheorge Hagi

In this 3 man midfield the team will be employing Claude Makelele as the holding midfielder, allowing the attacking creativities of Zinedine Zidane and Gheorge Hagi to flourish. Makelele will be asked to play a similar role to the one he played at Real Madrid and Chelsea, very disciplined and not too fussy; just win the ball and find the nearest man. Zidane and Hagi will be given the freedom to roam and find space to link up with the front 3.

Players to choose from: Ronaldo, Henrik Larsson, Dennis Bergkamp, Tony Yeboah and Nwankwo Kanu

Strikers: Ronaldo, Henrik Larsson and Dennis Bergkamp

Bergkamp will effectively be playing behind the front 2 of Ronaldo and Larsson. His vision and creativity coupled with the abilities of Hagi and Zidane will allow Larsson and Ronaldo to concentrate on doing what they do best; scoring goals. With 3 of the most creative players to have ever played the game behind them it is safe to assume that the Brazilian and the Swede upfront will get a hatful of chances.

           Thuram             Maldini                        Adams               Carlos

Zidane              Hagi

Larsson            Ronaldo

So what do you think? Is this the best possible team so far? Who would you like to see considered next time?
